Page Take-Over Ads

These are the banner ads that take up much of the page once you scroll on them. They particularly annoying because you scroll over them on accident and then the close button is blended into the background. You see these types of ads on sites like Yahoo! News. These ads are especially annoying when coupled with sounds and/or flashing images.

If you do decide to run these kinds of ads, make sure that the close button can easily be found and that the fully revealed isn’t “too busy” and doesn’t strain the eyes or the ears. These ads can be effective if they ad value for the user, rather than just providing more information or increasing the size o the product being advertised.

For example, if these ads are widgetized, allowing the user to customize a vehicle for a car ad or view previews and get show times for a movie ads, users will be more likely to interact with an ad, click though, and the ad will be seen as a positive instead of a negative.
