How to Get Interviews with the Authority Figures in Your Niche

When I was first starting out, the number one thing I wanted to do was the get interviews with some of the authority figures in the niches I was working in. So, the question arose, how can I get these guys to take the time out of their day to answer a few questions for my new blog? The answer? Just Ask Them. I spent so much time trying to find a clever way to make them agree that I didn’t find the time to send any of them an e-mail. Once I finally did, the response rate was surprisingly high. So, how can you get interviews with authority figures in your niche? Simple, just contact them.

OK, so here are a few more focused tips than ” just contact them” to help you out.

  1. See if they have a telephone number listed on their “About Us” page and if they do, give them a call. If you have just a few questions, you will get a much better return rate if you interview via phone. Often times the person you want to interview has started their own business or has a “high position” at some company so visit their corporate website and see if you can find a work number. I don’t recommend calling any home numbers or cell phones (unless it is indicated that the cell phone is for work related matters). Make sure to send the completed interview with answers to the person whom you interviewed via E-Mail so they can look it over just in case they feel that they were misquoted, etc.
  2. Secondly, make sure that if you do e-mail somebody, you send the questions in the first e-mail itself. The person you want to interview probably gets a lot of e-mail so make things convenient.
  3. Finally, make it short, quick, and get to the point. Since the people who you want to interview get a lot of e-mails from people that they have never met, they tend to like to quickly zip through e-mail. Hence, until you build a personal relationship with the person, just say who you are, give a link to your site, and ask your questions.

These are the three tips I used when I first started out (and still use today) when I was/am looking to get an interview. If you have any other tips I would love to hear from you. Feel free to post a comment.
