Why 100 Organic Visitors are better than 10,000 Social Media Visitors

I love social media traffic. I love waking up and seeing an extra 30,000 visitors in my stat report. But, what I have realized from getting various bursts of social media traffic at different times is that 100 organic visitors can be better than 10,000 visitors from social media sites.

Lets do the math for a second. 10,000 social media visitors come once and probably never again. Therefore, you get a grand total of 10,000 visitors. However, organic visitors can become regular readers and either subscribe to your feed, or visit daily. 100 visitors a day, who come 30 times a month, equals 3000 monthly visitors.

But 10,000 is more than 3000.

This is true. But, in the long run, these 100 visitors will turn out to be much more useful.

Firstly, after just over 3 months, you will have received 10,000 visits from these 100 visitors. Secondly, these 100 visitors are more likely to tell other readers about your blog, resulting in more organic traffic. These visitors will also likely visit more pages than a social media visitor, and an increased page view count means more money if your blog sells CPM ads. Lastly, these visitors will most likely get involved with your blog, leaving comments and linking to you on their own websites, and this is always great for growth.

Wrap-Up: Social Media is great for short boosts of traffic, but your focus should be on acquiring long-tem organic visitors who will visit again and again.

Aditya,

Right on the money. After a few months of starting Digital Entreprneur, I’ve found exactly the same thing. Social media traffic just doesn’t convert the way that organic traffic does - the bounce rate for these people is higher (they usually read just one article) and for every 10,000 people that come to my site from stumble upon or digg, I get maybe a couple of dollars of adsense clicks and maybe a few subscribers, but it’s really hit or miss. Organic searchers, however stick around much longer, read multiple articles and convert so subcribers more often.

Great article.

Words to live by!

But I wonder what percentage of social media viewers would also fill the role of organic visitors? That is to say, we can’t totally discount social media, :).

Well, I must disagree totally with your comments here. I stumble, and I always like to get involved with the internets…

Maybe this was just a sly way to try and trick more social media sites visitors to get comment??

ooo, we will never know….
