Why You Need to Create Scannable Content

How many of you actually read all the blogs you visit? I doubt you read every word, analyze every detail, and take lots of time to fully understand each post. Instead, you most likely quickly scan over content, looking more in-depth at information you find interesting. Below are a few tips on how to create scannable content and content that people will want to read:

  1. Break up posts into a bunch of short paragraphs. They just seem more manageable to go through than one long paragraph
  2. Use lists like this one. Lists are very easy to scan and give you just the information you need.
  3. A picture says a thousand words. Instead of trying to explain something and rambling on, use a picture.
  4. Use different media types. Lots of text can be intimidating so mix it up with pictures, videos, widgets, and other interactive communication mediums.
  5. Last but not least, bold the important part in lists. This is one you want to do sparingly, but in a list, you may want to bold the titles of each section.

Now to get people to actually read the posts, there are two main things you can do. First, create a catchy title that will catch the attention and spark curiosity in your reader base. Secondly, if possible use and interesting picture to draw the reader’s attention.

I suggest that you visit your blog right now, take a look at the posts you have made over the past few days and weeks and see if the are easily scannable.
